La Maricolectiva Performance To Open QPOC Conference Friday, April 8, 2011 at UC Riverside

La Maricolactiva bring their spoken word, slam poetry, cabaret and stand up, spanish, english y espanglish with a kick of jota slang to UC Riverside on Friday, April 8 to open the 6th Annual Queer People of Color Conference. Co-sponsored by ASPB, their performance is open to the entire UCR campus and anyone registered to attend the QPOC Conference.

Catholics have the santisima trinidad (padre, hijo y espiritu santo) and us maricones have La Maricolectiva. La Yosi, La Neza y la Xuanis!!!

La Maricolectiva started out of the necessity for queer latino gender non conforming immigrant voices across the southwest to be heard. This collective of jotas aims at giving priority to those voices that come from displacement, documenting the undocumented and creating a homeland using palabra, teatro, drag y joteria.

La Maricolectiva is formed by 3 activist, community based jotas, Yosimar Reyes, from the mountains of Guerrero based in San Jose California, Neza Leal based in San Francisco, and Xuanito Espinoza Cuellar from la sierra fria de Aguascalientes now based in Las Vegas.

La Jotisima trinidad de la Maricolectiva reclaims the jota/o experience and seeks to “build a stage on top of the world” para las colored jotitas who speak softly y fiercely.

Previous works by these jotas tackle immigration and citizenism, trangender issues, heterosexism, sexism, feminism, weightism, classism, imperialism, curanderismo de liberacion, multiplicity of gender, sexuality, race and ethnicity, and the queer immigrant experience.

The members of this collective have also been published in several national and local poetry journals, featured in local papers and performed in numerous places. The unique style of each jota brings to the table a fresh, innovative and revolutionary outlook a nuestro mundo, nuestra experiencia, and unidas las tres somos trouble!!!
